Applications Open for 2026 IJA–IRE Investigative Journalism Workshop for Indigenous Students

The Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA), in partnership with Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) and the Oklahoma Media Center, is excited to announce a new training opportunity for Indigenous students interested in strengthening their investigative and data journalism skills.

The day-and-a-half workshop will take place February 12–13, 2026, in Oklahoma City. Participants will gain hands-on experience in investigative techniques, data analysis and storytelling, while connecting with working journalists and mentors in the field.

Fellowships are available and include travel stipends to support attendance. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with a final deadline of November 17, 2025 January 30, 2026.

The MacArthur Foundation also provided support toward fellowships.

Eligibility

This program is open to:

  • Indigenous students enrolled at any higher education institution in the United States
  • Students of all backgrounds attending Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions (ANNHs) and Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTIs)
