Indigenous Journalists Association develops 2026-2029 strategic plan

Three-year plan addresses organizational sustainability and prioritizes membership needs

The Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA) board of directors, staff and an invited guest created a new three-year strategic plan, guided by the 2025 membership survey, during a planning meeting on Oct. 24-25, 2025, in Chicago.

The previous strategic plan sunsets in 2026 and was also developed by engaging IJA leadership towards data-driven decision-making and analyzing the current membership’s needs and interests.

Five goals were set for the next three years:

  1. Invest in sustainable organizational infrastructure
  2. Champion IJA as a voice for Indigenous Journalism
  3. Modernize & Maintain Governing Documents
  4. Develop Intentional Program Strategy
  5. Increase Membership Engagement and Services

Strategic planning sessions were led by former executive director Pamela Silas, who has facilitated the organization’s strategic planning since 2015.

A report to members will be made during the annual membership luncheon at the Indigenous Media Conference (IMC), at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront Hotel in Portland, Oregon, July 22-24, 2026.

IJA extends heartfelt thanks to the Field Foundation, Northwestern University Office of Community Enrichment, Office of the Provost, Northwestern University Center for Native American and Indigenous Research, and Northwestern University Medill School for their financial support of the retreat and for providing speakers and facilitators for this important gathering.
