Description

The Oklahoman, in partnership with the Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA) and the Kirkpatrick Foundation, is offering a 10-week, full-time, paid summer internship for three Native American and Indigenous students who are passionate about journalism. We are looking for talented individuals eager to gain professional-level reporting experience and tell compelling stories about communities across Oklahoma.
Included will be covered travel and attendance at the annual IJA Conference and a free student membership to IJA for one year. While mentorship and coaching are provided, interns are expected to work independently in a deadline-driven environment.
Interns will cover breaking news, trending topics, and feature stories, working alongside reporters, photographers, videographers, editors, and the audience team to expand their reach on social media.  Journalists with video skills and a strong interest in video journalism are strongly encouraged to apply.
This job may include evening and weekend hours, depending on the newsroom’s needs and the intern's schedule.
Requirements:
  • Must be college students eligible for IJA membership.
  • Journalism majors are preferred, but students from related fields are also considered.
  • Previous experience in journalism is a plus (internships, freelance work, or student media).
  • Strong writing, reporting, and fact-checking skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced newsroom and meet deadlines.
  • Language skills beyond English are a plus.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Deadline to apply: Jan. 30, 2026
Application Instructions
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
  1. Your resume (one to two pages).
  2. A cover letter outlining how you would approach the internship and what you hope to gain from the experience.
  3. 3-5 work samples (links or attachments).
It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
