The Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA) is seeking a Program Manager to join our growing team and help steward programs that uplift Indigenous journalists, storytellers, and media workers across Turtle Island and beyond.

This role is grounded in relationship-building, collaboration, and service to community. The Program Manager supports the vision, care, and coordination of IJA’s programs, including the Indigenous Media Conference (IMC) and newsroom training through the Indigenous Media Initiative (IMI). Working closely with staff, board members, volunteers, and partners, this position helps ensure our programs are responsive, accountable, and rooted in Indigenous values.

This is a full-time, remote position with a flexible 40-hour work week. Regular domestic travel is required, with some international travel possible.

Compensation & Support

  • Starting salary: $55,000 annually
  • Health insurance stipend: Up to $1,000 per month

About the Role

The Program Manager works under the guidance of the Membership Director and alongside IJA leadership to bring programs to life with care, intention, and respect. This role blends strategy with hands-on coordination and is ideal for someone who values community connection, collective leadership, and strengthening Indigenous media ecosystems.

Program Stewardship & Planning

  • Work in relationship with IJA’s Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and committees to carry out the organization’s mission
  • Support program strategy and implementation in alignment with board-approved goals
  • Help plan and support the Indigenous Media Conference and other gatherings that center Indigenous journalists and media workers
  • Gather, reflect on, and share program data and feedback to guide future growth

Programs, Gatherings & Learning Spaces

  • Coordinate the planning, logistics, and evaluation of IMC, IMI newsroom trainings, webinars, and regional events
  • Help develop and update training materials, curricula, and resources for participants and facilitators
  • Maintain timelines and communication so staff, volunteers, and partners feel supported and informed
  • Serve as a welcoming point of contact for program participants, speakers, and collaborators

Relationships, Partnerships & Sustainability

  • Help grow and sustain partnerships with sponsors, funders, newsrooms, and community allies
  • Support fundraising and resource development efforts that strengthen long-term program sustainability
  • Represent IJA at conferences, member gatherings, and journalism events

Operations, Communication & Care

  • Support program communications across platforms, including website updates and public-facing materials
  • Coordinate logistics for newsroom trainings and events with attention to detail and accessibility
  • Manage program schedules, reports, and evaluation processes
  • Support internal operations and board committees as needed

Finance & Administration

  • Assist with basic financial processes such as invoicing, payment processing, and record-keeping
  • Support development of annual program budgets and post-event reporting

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience in nonprofit program management, preferably within journalism, media, or community-based organizations
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects with care and follow-through
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience with event planning, budgeting, fundraising, and program evaluation
  • Ability to work respectfully and effectively with Indigenous communities and diverse partners
  • Comfort working independently in a remote environment while staying connected to a team
  • Familiarity with digital tools, social media, and evolving media landscapes
  • Willingness to travel regularly
