PEN America partners to launch free journalists’ safety, health webinar series staring June 11

PEN America in partnership with the Committee to Protect Journalists, International Women’s Media Foundation, Freedom of the Press Foundation, and Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma have developed a free webinar series on journalists’ safety and health that starts June 11.

Amid sustained protests against police brutality in recent weeks, the US Press Freedom Tracker is investigating over 380 press freedom violations, including over 50 arrests and over 200 physical attacks against reporters — the majority perpetrated by the police.

As part of their response, PEN America has partnered to developed a webinar series to empower journalists to take care of their safety and well being as they cover the protests, with an emphasis on their legal rights, physical safety, digital safety, and mental health.

Protesters and organizers, including those serving as citizen journalists, are welcome to join. While these trainings are tailored to the needs and concerns of professional reporters, much of the information will be useful to anyone participating in and commenting on the protests.
