WINNIPEG, Manitoba — The Native American Journalists Association will host the 2023 National Native Media Conference Aug. 10-12 downtown at the Delta Hotel and RBC Convention Center Winnipeg.
This year marks 40 years that Indigenous journalists have worked to support and sustain NAJA. Originally formed as the Native American Press Association in 1983, the name changed in 1990, to be more inclusive of broadcast journalists. The organization has grown from just a handful of reporters to a membership of nearly 1,000, which includes Indigenous journalists, funders, educators and partners across the United States and Canada.
“I’m honored that the board voted in favor of bringing NAJA back to its roots. We have been floating the idea of hosting the conference in Canada again since 2019. This organization was founded by journalists from both sides of the medicine line and I am proud to see us carry on that legacy,” NAJA Associate Director and former president Francine Compton said.
Winnipeg is home to Compton and a place that became a cornerstone of Indigenous journalism.
“A foundation was built here by APTN and CBC Indigenous. I can’t wait for everyone to see that. I look forward to hosting our members and industry friends in Winnipeg in 2023,” she said.
Registration
Members, attendees and exhibitors can now register for the 2023 National Native Media Conference with the discounted early-bird rate through June 1.
Pricing for all tiers includes access to workshops, sessions, screenings and keynote presentations, as well as Opening Night Reception and daily breakfast. In addition, all attendees will have on-demand access to programming on the NAJA Conference Hub following the event.
Special event and meal tickets for the NAJA Membership Luncheon, National Native Media Awards Banquet and After-Awards Reception are not included with registration.

Special Events
Tickets for the NAJA Membership Luncheon on Friday, Aug. 11 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m are available for purchase for $75 for members and non-members. Attendees will review NAJA’s accomplishments over the past year and the organization will present the 2023 NAJA-Medill Milestone Achievement Award. An informal meet-and-greet with NAJA Board of Directors candidates will follow.
Tickets to the National Native Media Awards Banquet on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 6 -9 p.m. are available for purchase for $100 and includes access to the NAJA After-Awards Reception following the banquet. A ticket bundle for both events is available for $135.
Celebrate First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada, the work of fellow NAJA members and support Indigenous journalism by bidding on items during the silent auction, which benefits NAJA scholarships. The online auction site will open before the event with more information on donations and bidding forthcoming.

Conference Program Proposals, Sponsorships
The call for National Native Media Conference proposals closed March 24 however, NAJA has reserved space in the program for sponsored sessions and events.
NAJA will facilitate conference program sessions about best practices in Indigenous media, training and workshops to support and enhance the knowledge and skills of journalists covering Indigenous communities.
NAJA seeks program proposals that are informative, educational and training-based, led by Indigenous journalists teaching in-depth skills and sharing new insights on media. Proposals that explore data of Indigenous populations are also encouraged.
