Renew your membership, join today or gift one for the holidays
NORMAN, Oklahoma — The Indigenous Journalists Association reminds members to check their renewal dates, invites new prospects covering Indigenous communities to join and encourages journalists to consider purchasing a membership for others for the holidays.
IJA changed its name from the Native American Journalists Association with a vote from its Indigenous members during the 2023 National Native Media Conference (now the Indigenous Media Conference) Aug. 10-12 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The change recognizes the need to develop relationships, contacts, and cooperation across international borders and reflects a desire to align terminology with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and IJA welcomes those covering Indigenous communities to join us for this growth and mission.
All memberships include access to IJA’s newsletter and discounted Indigenous Media Conference registration and award entry fees. Student level memberships offer exclusive fellowship and scholarship opportunities, and institutional level memberships offer access to the Indigenous Media List and free job postings on the IJA job board. IJA is currently working to add more benefits. View membership levels and benefits here.
IJA is also currently collecting feedback via the membership survey open through Jan. 26, 2024. All respondents may enter a weekly drawing for a chance at winning a Eighth Generation digital gift card.
Entry into the 2024 Indigenous Media Awards Professional and Student (Indigenous) Divisions will require an up-to-date membership that specifies Indigenous affiliation. Entrants that qualify for the Associate (non-Indigenous) Divisions will receive a 50% discount on entries with an up-to-date membership.
Members may access their accounts and manually renew, donate or shop the online IJA store anytime at the new website IndigenousJournalists.org. IJA also encourages members to review and update their profiles by logging in using the email account associated with their membership.

About the Indigenous Journalists Association
The Indigenous Journalists Association’s mission is centered on the idea that accurate and contextual reporting about Indigenous people and communities is necessary to overcome biases and stereotypes portrayed in popular and mainstream media. Expanding access to accurate news and information is essential to an informed citizenry and healthy democracy, across tribal, local, state and national levels.
For more than 40 years, Indigenous journalists across the United States and Canada have worked to support and sustain IJA. Originally formed as the Native American Press Association in 1983, the organization has grown from just a handful of reporters to a membership of nearly 900, which includes Indigenous journalists, associates, educators and partners.
