Deadline for Indigenous Journalism Fellowship applications extended to March 5

Applications are now open for the newly-renamed Indigenous Journalism Fellowship. The Indigenous Journalists Association is accepting applications through March 5. Selected fellows will build their reporting and interpersonal skills in a digital newsroom experience before, during and after the 2024 Indigenous Media Conference set for July 25-27 in Oklahoma City.

The 2024 class of fellows will participate in a six-week virtual curriculum with selected mentors representing broadcast, radio, print and digital media. This innovative experience is designed to leverage the inclusivity and accessibility of online learning while allowing fellows to continue with classwork, jobs, internships and other responsibilities. Additionally, fellows will participate in the Indigenous Media Conference, network with other Indigenous journalists and strengthen their reporting skills.

IJA will facilitate a virtual curriculum featuring guest speakers and best practices in Indigenous media, training and workshops.

Under the leadership of IJA Vice President and Fellowship Director Jourdan Bennett Begaye and IJA Education Manager Sheena Roetman, student fellows will work with mentors to produce coverage of Turtle Island throughout the program. Fellows will be encouraged to explore deeper coverage of Indigenous issues to complete their fellowship requirements.

Conference attendance from July 25-27 is mandatory and IJA will provide travel assistance for all selected fellows.
