New VAWA reporting guide released

The Native American Journalists Association has published a new reporter’s guide to covering violence against women in Indian Country. The release coincides with the “Covering sexual assault in Indian Country and beyond” symposium hosted in collaboration with Ohio University on Nov. 14.

The guide provides information about the Violence Against Women Act and direction for reporter’s covering these important and complex stories. Reporter’s using the guide will find background on the VAWA, statistics about violence against Native women, resources to add depth to their reporting, and a checklist for important elements of the story. The guide can be downloaded here.

The event at Ohio University will include a keynote speaker, former NAJA president Mary Annette Pember (Red Cliff Band of Wisconsin Ojibwe), and a panel discussion about the epidemic of violence and sexual assault against Native women.

The event will begin at 7:30 pm Central on Nov. 14 and will be held in Room 145 of Schoonover Hall on the OU Athens campus. It will be live streamed and can be viewed in its entirety here.
