The Native American Journalists Association’s past president and executive director Mary Annette Pember (Red Cliff Band Ojibwe) will be the keynote speaker at the Ohio University event “Covering sexual assault in Indian Country and beyond.” The November 14 talk and panel discussion is hosted by NAJA in collaboration with the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism, the Scripps College of Communication, and the Institute for Applied Ethics. The event is organized by NAJA vice president Dr. Victoria LaPoe (Cherokee), a professor at OU.
The event begins at 7:30 pm and will be held at Schoonover Hall, Room 145.
Pember, an award-winning Indigenous journalist and expert on covering sexual assault, trauma, policy, health and the environment, will advise students and attendees on how to cover sexual assault cases and share expert thoughts on coverage of violence against women.
Her keynote address will be followed by a panel of students, Dr. Patty Stokes of WGGS, who has expertise in the prevention and aftermath of sexual assault, and WOUB Editor-In-Chief Allison Hunter.
